The Hype About Macromedia Shockwave Games

By Jennifer Bowers

It is estimated that 400 million desktops at present have been installed with Macromedia Shockwave Players. This allows them to play free online games which have an astounding level of quality and detail. Shockwave is Macromedia's first multimedia player and predates the existence of Flash. The original concept of Shockwave was meant for movies but it was eventually found to be an excellent tool for the development of online games.

Shockwave's 3D engine is conceded to be the cream of the crop for online games. It has surpassed even Java in popularity. Proof of its excellent quality is the growing number of believers in the community of developers. The Shockwave player will recognize and accept all flash files. The Shockwave engine renders objects much faster than Flash, and it also works with the video hardware on the user's computer.

The free online games produced using the Shockwave engine is nothing short of impressive. The consensus is that with refinements and upgrades, this tool has the potential to give stiff competition to console games. At this point, it may sound a bit presumptuous but it is a legitimate possibility. Already, the Shockwave engine's graphics capability is considered by many to be at par with that of the PSP or Nintendo DS. All these contentions are arguable, nonetheless the mere fact that there are claims along these lines are proof of the high regard that Shockwave commands.

Vastly diverse kinds of games can be developed in Shockwave. So far, games in Shockwave include racing games, simulators, combat, and RPGs. Many of these free online games require users to meet certain system requirements in order to play them. It is in this area that Shockwave has a lot of catching up to do with the console games. All games which are designed for a specific console will work. In comparison, you will need a powerful computer to play with Shockwave games. The great equalizer for Shockwave games is its cost advantage over console games.

Aside from the many free games available with Shockwave, games can be downloaded for as low as $10.00. That's a lot of savings considering that console games will cost you $40.00 to play PSP, or $60.00 for an Xbox 360 game. More and improved games are continually made available in Shockwave games and if the trend is not reversed, then it is inevitable that computer games will soon regain popularity. Shockwave has become a force to be reckoned with in online games as well as in its development.
