Things You Should Know About Mmorpgs

By Larry Sabler

The MMORPG means Massive Multiplayer Online Role Play(ing) Game which is a game played in computers by thousands or millions of players from all the corners of the world.

In this type of game, the player figuratively enters a fantasy world and plays a role of his own making with his character supposedly tasked to perform and complete a mission or an objective. Usually these worlds will be persistent, hosted on a permanent server, and actions taken by the players will have an effect on the realm or world. Thus making it interactive, even when the player is not playing the game. In effect, life in this world continues in the same way that life goes on in the real world.

For example, in World of Warcraft episode, a viral outbreak was caused by a spell that made players sick and infected all the other players. The disease effect got out of hand and as players ran back to towns and cities the virus spread and became an epidemic. Later, a patch was released to remedy the problem, but the community was shocked at how closely the behavior seen in the game resembled real life.

Perhaps a reflection of man's inherent desire for extraordinary powers, many games like World of Warcraft and Guildwars are based on a world of magic and fantasy. Other games are supposed to take place in some distant planets and involve the use and time travel in spaceships. There are also players who chose to be more down to earth, literally that is, with events happening in the real world that resemble or are patterned after real places and, perhaps to be more realistic, places that are familiar to some players.

MUDs or Multi-User Dungeons were the MMORPGs first games. In this program, the course of events and the acts of the characters are controlled by the players through a command system. Although simple 2D graphical versions and even 3D MUDs do exist. Similar to MUDs are browser based, like RuneScape, which are played entirely in the users browser. These early ones are text based or in complex 3Ds and are as functional as the latter MORPGS, and are for the most part free.

They were virtually unknown a decade ago and now they are commonplace for most gamers. In fact worldwide revenues for them are reaching the billions and growing every year.
