Star Wars: The Old Republic, often referred to as SWTOR, came out in December of 2011 and quickly accrued over one million subscribers. This officially makes the game one of the fastest growing MMOs in history. There are quite a few players claiming that SWTOR is just like all of the other MMORPGs out there, but with a Star Wars theme. What is it about this game that draws so many players in and why have so many PC gamers fallen in love with it?
The SWTOR storyline is set thousands of years before the rise of Darth Vader or any of the other famous Star Wars film characters. The Republic and the Empire have just signed an agreement called the Treaty of Coruscant which has brought about peace between the two groups. Given the groups history, peace is not something that would last very long. Hostility is beginning to rise between the two yet again and it is only a matter of time before the treaty is broken. War is certainly on the horizon.
It is at this point that players actually start the game. Each player must choose which side they want to fight for should a war break out. The Republic and Sith Empire both have four distinct, main classes. Each one of those classes have two advanced classes within them. The Imperial Agent, Bounty Hunter, Sith Inquisitor and Sith Warrior are all a part of the Empire. The Republic, on the other hand, includes the: Jedi Knight, Jedi Consular, Trooper and Smuggler.
Starting at level 10, players will be able to choose between two specializations. This is where the class turns into an advanced one. Once chosen, a class becomes significantly more powerful and can be fine tuned to a person's personal preferences. People will be able to decide on certain abilities to match their characters play style. If a person rather play in large groups, they will need to choose abilities that work best in that situation. Solo players can do the same and make their characters into fighting machines. There are others who want to defend the group and will choose a slew of defense abilities to hold off their foes. The way a person plays and the developing story is dependent upon choosing their specializations.
The Star Wars galaxy is filled with things for players to do while they advance through the leveling process. Players can complete quests, engage in epic PvP (player vs. player) battles or defeat bosses in flashpoints (commonly referred to as raids). Each activity requires a different play style and technique. While going through the game, players will pick up new gear and supplies. Once they've reached level 16, they even get their very own ship! This ship is customized to each class and allows you to travel through the galaxy in style or take part in space combat missions.
The storyline and quests in Star Wars: The Old Republic make the game a very strong competitor in a rather picky genre. The subscribers have been flowing in and the game has taken many players from some of the top MMO games on the market. Time will tell how dominate this game can become and if people will continue to play as expansions are developed.
