Consider Adding a Layer of Biometric Security

By Daniel Turbin

We all take security pretty seriously. Gone are the days when most people would go to sleep at night before locking the house up. The same applies with safeguarding a firm's assets, be they info or otherwise.

Many facilities have magnetic key-card controlled security doors, password gates over their web systems, stout firewalls, and similar but if you're trying to find one more defensive layer, then one specific thing to consider would be biometric safety devices.

These most commonly take the shape of fingerprint or retinal scanners, and are made nowadays, even to work on PC's, such that an individual workstation won't function unless the would-be user scans his or her thumb print on a reader.

Such systems supply an further layer of security that is relatively tough to defeat. Fingerprints and the human retina are unique for each individual, and comparatively difficult to reproduce ( though not impossible, it should be asserted ). Even so , such systems are useful only insofar as they control access to specific pieces of technology, or precise physical areas of your building ( a retinal scanner controlling access to a doorway leading to a sensitive area of the company, or a thumbprint scanner controlling access to a selected workstation, for instance ).

In the case of workstation control nevertheless , such protection could be rendered moot if that device is attached to a LAN, or to the internet, because those connections open up the chance for remote access of the machine, so it's not a bullet evidence solution, and should not be treated as such.

In any case, the next time you have a network security audit scheduled, this is one other thing to consider, and another possible defensive layer for your company to employ. If you haven't had a security audit conducted lately, then I'd prompt you to do that. An annual audit is good not only for peace of mind, but also because network security is so dynamic and liquid that a periodic check is in order if only to make sure you've not left yourself open to attack!
