When you hear about sturdy laptops, you might think of things like military or commercial uses for notebook PCs, or even things like mobile sales forces outfitted with shock-resistant computers. But rugged technology is utilized in so many different industries today, many of which might be a bit of a surprise to folks unfamiliar with all the advantages of sturdy PCs and the flaws of regular PCs in the wrong situations.
A team known as The Heart of Borneo Charity (which is made of filmmakers, explorers and scientists) received one or two donated laptops for their trek into the rainforests on an expedition in 2010 to broaden awareness and education about the delicate ecosystem of the area.
Sadly, the restrictions of standard PC technology became clear very quickly, with the 1st PC failing after only 2 days in the 100% humidity of a rainforest environment. Storms are frequent and regularly torrentialâ"not a good environment for a fragile notebook PC.
Panasonic found out about their plight and gave them Panasonic Toughbooks that are built to stand up to extreme humidity, rain and the other hazards found in the rainforest. The crew was able to communicate with the world outside for their own protection together with record their findings as they went. The long battery life let them explore farther and farther away from their base camp, and check their observations against museum and history data repositories.
They managed to scan pictures from still cameras they'd set up in the expectation of capturing new species or new behavior from known species. They could check photographs instantly and even send it where they wished. Anti-glare touchscreens on the PCs meant that they could work outside in the full rainforest sunlight.
The durable features of the computers meant they did not have to be afraid of an unanticipated downpour, or even the humidity seeping into the laptops and destroying the elements.
