The In-Game Culture Of A Space MMO

By Aaliyah I. Herzog

Space MMO games are growing in popularity together with many other massively multiplayer online role playing games and have started to create their own unique culture. MMORPG's now represent a considerable chunk of the global gaming market, accounting for millions of dollars in sales and month subscriptions. Game designers and developers need to constantly be focusing on adaptations and upgrades to their online games in order to keep the in-game environment feeling fresh and to prevent gamers from becoming bored with it. Cultures are now forming around MMORPG games because new communities of gamers are being built both inside and outside the game world where new expressions and behavior are taking over.

Space MMO games are always being updated by their designers so that there is fresh content for players to enjoy and the game never becomes boring. Buffing and nerfing are two MMORPG expressions that are typical in the online gaming world and refer to the way game designers tweak the character roles in the game to update the game play. Buffing refers to a positive change, such as the granting of additional and beneficial abilities to a certain class of character. If a character's skills have been nerfed, however, you can expect unhappy gamers since some of the advantages they once had in the game have now been removed.

The considerable portion of space MMO games feature progression systems, such as leveling up, that allow player to keep track of their progress in the game. Grinding, a term used on a regular basis in online games, is a system of leveling up through which you simply hunt down one enemy after another until your experience grants you a new level. While it is not typically a favorite part of online gaming, grinding is considered to be one of the basic elements of all MMORPG's and is a very common term amongst gamers.

The basic feature of online games is their social features, such as in game chat systems that let players talk to one another as they play. The chat system is a place where gaming culture can definitely be seen since there are always abbreviated ways of discussing items, quests, and other in-game topics.

A few non-gamers may be surprised to hear that space MMO cultures exist, but the reality is that the community of gamers is very strong. When you start playing an MMORPG, you may be surprised by how quickly you become a part of the culture, too.
