Electric Monitoring and Rugged Technology

By Allyson Westcot

Smart metering is a system letting your home or business electricity meter monitor your usage and send that data back to the collection center every day. The meter is connected into the system, in other words. Meter readers who come to your home and test your usage are not necessary. But just as importantly than that, smart meters give companies the power to watch usage, measure it and glean vital information from it. The smart meters allow for correct billing together with the research, too

About 8 million houses have smart meters today, but that is predicted to increase to about 40 million in the next 4 years. That means that experts who install these meters will be on the move during that time, and repair employees who test and check the meters will be, also.

Rugged technology is good for people who monitor, maintain, install and do mobile work in nearly any industry. Electrical crews may need to handle bad weather, intense temperatures and other elements. There's also the matter of their automobiles and the vibrations they cause.

While a standard laptop computer taken along in the car might do all right if it's off while the car is on, that would suggest the workers would have to turn it on at each site, be very careful while using it outside to be sure it is not too damp, and then switch it off before going to the next place.

A rugged laptop, on the other hand, can handle the vibration and any weather or temperatures that happen. Because the rugged laptop may be integrated with the smart meter for testing purposes, the laptop must be able to stay on and remain reliable. Custom software is needed for proper testing and data encryption, so a standard laptop computer running a standard mobile operating system probably wouldn't be well placed to handle all it has to do.
