All About Ink & Printers

By Keren Kipfer

Thousands of years ago, ancient people created ink out of many items. In China, minerals such as graphite were used to make ink, as were indigenous plants. In ancient India, scribes used a mixture of pitch, burned bones and tar to create ink. Modern types of ink are created using different ingredients, and there are many different inks used for everything from magazines to all of our food packaging.

There are many different types of inkjet printers, and each uses a specific type of ink. The printers we typically have at home or at the office are the type that contains cartridges of ink. These cartridges contain pre-mixed solutions of ink, and the consumer simply inserts a new cartridge whenever it is needed. However, industrial printers are a bit more complicated, and the operators must learn how to add the precise mixture of ink and make-up fluids.

Beyond the typical office-type printer, businesses often use specialized inkjet printers, a sophisticated form of either a Continuous Inkjet Printer or a Drop-On-Demand printer. These printers are used for many industries but are particularly helpful machines for those who need to ensure that their products have identification information. Product ids, such as the batch number, product numbers and date created or the date in which a product expires, are crucial bits of information, particularly in food-related or pharmaceutical businesses. Other business, such as the automotive industry and electronics industry, also print product ids and serial numbers on all of their goods.

There are many brands of continuous inkjet or CIJ printers, such as Maxima and Domino. In CIJ printers, a pump is used to propel ink through a gun body and then through a nozzle, thus creating a constant stream of droplets of ink, with speeds as fast as 165,000 droplets per second. These droplets also dry extremely quickly, which prevents smearing. Both CIJ printers and the drop-on-demand types of printers can be used to imprint product ids on everything from glass bottles to bags of potato chips to shipping boxes and much more.

A drop-on-demand or DOD printer exists in two forms, either a thermal type of DOD or a piezoelectric DOD. Piezoelectric printing is a form of inkjet printing where an electric charge creates pressure, forcing ink droplets out of nozzles and onto your product. The thermal DOD printer is similar, but it uses heat as opposed to voltage. Thermal DOD inks are less expensive, but there are fewer types of inks that you can use. Piezo DOD printers offer a wider array of inks, but they tend to cost more. There are many manufacturers of DOD printers, such as Domino and Altima.

While there are many high quality brands of both CIJ and DOD printers, purchasing a new machine is an expensive option. Instead, find a company that sells refurbished machines as well as low-cost replacement inks and make-up. You will still have the same level of quality and speed of output without the high cost. As you will constantly need to purchase quality ink, finding a company with high quality coder ink and fluids at low prices will have a big impact on your bottom line.
