Are Online Flight Simulators Influenced by Arcade Developments?

By Clare Johnson

Originally, the many PC flight simulator games which are available today, were created for consoles. Some were distributed to the arcades. It is believed, however, that the majority were created with the PC in mind.

This niche is popular all around the world and one of the most popular games is Landing High Japan by Taito. This was originally designed as a cabinet game. People who are aware of this game are hopeful that Taito will create an online flight simulator. When they produced Landing High Japan, it was very surreal and featured real life airports and maps of Kansai, Haneda, Hiroshima, Shin-Chitose and Fukuoka.

There were many exceptional features including speech simulation, where users just had to press a button to turn this feature on, helping to make the game experience extremely realistic. The planes were based on original aircraft and players were able to choose which one they wanted to fly. Users flew on All Nippon Airways and it was felt that this sort of computer program would be ideal as an online flight simulator

Interestingly enough, this was not the first time that flight simulation software came to the arcade. Taito's work on Landing High Japan was a revival of the 1987 arcade title, Midnight Landing. Top Landing was released in 1988, and that game also featured similar game play.

Taito appeared to be waiting for the Power PC603e microprocessor, as it was 1999 before they released their second to last game for the arcades. Developing their hardware may result in a state of the art flight simulator game being released by them. In the meantime, Google has beaten them to it by releasing their own version.

When first starting out with flight simulator software, a good choice could be Google flight simulator, although it is not considered one of the best, it will enable you to become familiar with this type of software. The latest version actually contains an Easter egg and by pressing certain keys, you can activate this. You are given the choice of flying either an F16 jet or an SR22 prop plane, with the obvious speed difference and their visual maps create a great experience of actually flying.

Google Earth is a very popular piece of software. Employers often complain about how much time is lost because of office clerks messing around with it. While it might be fun to waste time with, serious gamers might want to look elsewhere if they want to play a flight simulator.

Xbox users enjoyed the game Yousei no Mau Sora, which was created by Sentou Yousei Yukikaze and flight simulator users hope that this game will be released as an online version. The Anime series was used to base this game on and disappointingly to people in North America, it was not released there. Anime and Manga are popular outside of Japan and it is a mystery as to why the producers made this decision.
