Why Are Servers Useful?

By Jack Wogan

There was a time when people did not see the usefulness of computers. They did not trust a digital file and they truly believed that they could find a document in a stack of papers sooner than the same digitized document in a computer. Now, there is no shred of doubt in anyone's mind that you can find anything faster if you have a computer. If you are connected to a network, the access to files multiplies exponentially as every single file is just a few clicks away.

Computers are hearts of businesses these days. We live in a society where information is power and whoever can access the information more quickly has more power. That is what servers are for. They provide the information stored on them to all the computers that requested it. Put in different words, they are the managers of network resources.

Of course, that is a vague and all including definition of what servers are and their job. Most people think that a server is a special computer that is locked in a room where no one can access them. That only happens in the movies and maybe the CIA. A server does not have to be a computer. It can be an application that handles a specific type of requests. You can have only one running server application installed on a computer or you can have more. You can even use a server as a normal computer although it is not indicated. The bottom of line is that it is really up to you to define your server.

You can use servers how handle the behaviour of other computers in the network. You can even have a print server to manage all the printers in your work place. You can even host your web site if you have installed a web server. A backup server is a must have. You do not want to risk losing years of data because of a malfunction of a hard drive.

Buying a new server is a big decision and has to be treated as such. You have to take into account all the factors. The last thing you want to do is spend a lot of money on a piece of equipment that will not meet your requirements. The best way to go is to find a server that will allow you to do future upgrades, leaving you an open door in case your firm will expand.
