Getting A Stronger Charge From Your Laptop Battery

By Damion Turk

A laptop computer is a very versatile accessory which can be used for a variety of activities such as for work, school, surfing the web or playing games. It can also be used in a variety of different locations, such as at home, on the road, in a caf or in the office.

But the ease of using a laptop depends completely on the capacity of the battery. The life of most laptop batteries is limited to two or three hours. As soon as the battery starts working, it need some back up for retaining its capacity. Thus a stand-by power source is needed for the uninterrupted use of a laptop. Regular recharging helps to maintain long hours of usage.

Most laptop batteries do not last very long at all in terms of their charge. So if you have the laptop charger you can plug it in and provide power for your computer no matter where you are. But you can also charge the computer so that you can take it off the cord for a good amount of time.

The laptop battery will easily get hot when it is permanently linked to a source of power supply. This will reduce the charge storing capability of the battery. When this happens frequently, the battery will die soon.

A good hint is to use the icon on your laptop computer to tell you when your battery is running low. Then you should definitely plug it in, but the trick is to only keep it plugged in until the battery is fully charged and do not leave it in there too long.

Ideally, for most batteries, and particularly for nickel based laptop batteries, you should keep your laptop plugged in with the power cord and battery recharger until the battery icon shows that the laptop battery is 100% charged. Once the icon shows the battery is full, unplug the charger from the laptop and run it off the battery. Wait until it nears 0% charge again before you reinsert the charger. This will extend the battery life of your laptop.

If it is a lithium ion battery, it is especially important that you do not let it go completely low in its charge. You can plug this type of battery in at almost any time and you will not harm it. This is the kind newer computers have, and you shouldn't let these run out.

During travel, Lithium-ion batteries can be charged whenever possible in order to maintain battery charge. Thus the laptop won't run out of battery. In situations without a charger in hand, power rescue options like disconnecting wi-fi, diminishing screen brightness, sleep/hibernate mode of operation etc. can be adopted for extending the available battery time.
