How To Extend Battery Life For Your Laptop

By Damion Turk

A laptop computer is highly useful for people including students and business people. We can easily browse the net or check our daily works or even play games irrespective of whether we are at home, office or in transit.

The most important accessory for your laptop is your laptop charger. This is a vital component of whether the portability of your laptop works for you or not as the battery life of a laptop is seldom longer than just a few hours. Should you not have a battery charger to hand, you will not be able to power your laptop back up. It is a dual use accessory as it can also be used as an alternative power source.

In order to run the laptop for a long time, timely recharge is essential. A breakdown of laptop in the midst of a class, project presentation or meeting is really bad. If the work is not saved properly, it will be a dreadful situation. At the same time, if a charger is permanently connected to a laptop for convenience, it will destroy the battery capacity.

The laptop battery will easily get hot when it is permanently linked to a source of power supply. This will reduce the charge storing capability of the battery. When this happens frequently, the battery will die soon.

An efficient solution to preserve your laptop's battery life is to ensure that your laptop charger is only plugged in while the battery is charging and as soon as it is finished, you remove the charger. This is easy to do by keeping an eye on the icon on your desktop which shows the current status of your battery's charge. When you have the laptop charger plugged in to your computer, the icon will change to show that you are charging your battery by running off the charger.

Ideally, for most batteries, and particularly for nickel based laptop batteries, you should keep your laptop plugged in with the power cord and battery recharger until the battery icon shows that the laptop battery is 100% charged. Once the icon shows the battery is full, unplug the charger from the laptop and run it off the battery. Wait until it nears 0% charge again before you reinsert the charger. This will extend the battery life of your laptop.

It is advisable never to allow your laptop's battery to discharge completely, particularly if it is one of the newer lithium-ion batteries, found in newer computers, which can be charged at any time. Aside from the negative effects to your battery's life, letting your battery run down completely might cause you to lose work or interrupt your train of thought while browsing the Internet.

During travel, Lithium-ion batteries can be charged whenever possible in order to maintain battery charge. Thus the laptop won't run out of battery. In situations without a charger in hand, power rescue options like disconnecting wi-fi, diminishing screen brightness, sleep/hibernate mode of operation etc. can be adopted for extending the available battery time.
